The said person made a mistake misleading this wealthy Muslim. Indeed, he is either ignorant or arrogant. It is not permissible for a person
to break their Sawm in Ramadan except for a Shar`y (Islamic legal) excuse e.g. Sickness, traveling, and the like. Thus it becomes obligatory upon the person who broke his Sawm to make up for these days, as Allah (Exalted be He) says:
The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’ân, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Saum (fasts) that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Saum (fasts) must be made up] from other days.
(Part No. 10; Page No. 145) Furthermore, it is not permissible for a person to feed a needy person instead of Sawm unless they are sick or elderly and are unable to observe Sawm as stated by the specialized physicians.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
