Vowing to throw a party if granted a child

Q 3: I vowed to hold a concert if Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) blesses me with a baby. Now I do not want to fulfill this vow because it involves some kind of (Part No. 23; Page No. 232) unlawful fun. What is the ruling on this? It should be noted that I have not had the baby until now.

A: It is unlawful for you to hold such a concert. You have to offer a Kaffarah (expiation) for a broken oath. The Sunnah with regards to having a newborn baby is to slaughter two sheep if it is a male baby and one sheep if it is a female baby. This should be done on the seventh day of his/her birth. The Sunnah with regard to slaughtering a sheep is that some of it is given in charity, some is to be eaten and some is to be given as a gift. You may distribute its meat uncooked. The sheep should be the same as what is slaughtered for Ud-hiyah (sacrificial animal offered by non-pilgrims).May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
