Q 2: It was said in one of the Hadith reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) on the subject of (Part No. 13; Page No. 267) Riba (usury/interest) that
there are seventy-three forms of Riba.
Please explain these forms in detail, so people can avoid them and be prevented from falling into them?
A:
The Hadith stating that
There are seventy-three forms of Riba
was narrated by
Ibn Majah from
Ibn Mas‘ud,
and also narrated by
Al-Hakim
with the following addition:
The least of which is as abhorrent as a man having intercourse with his own mother and the worst of which is (violating) the honor and sanctity of a Muslim.
Both narrations were mentioned by
Al-Suyuty in "Al-Jami‘ Al-Saghir".
The first one was ranked as Da‘if (a Hadith that fails to reach the status of Hasan, due to a weakness in the chain of narration or one of the narrators) whereas the narration reported by
Al-Hakim was ranked as Sahih (a Hadith that has been transmitted by people known for their uprightness and exactitude; free from eccentricity and blemish).
Al-Munawy said in "Al-Fayd", on the authority of
Al-Hafizh Al-‘Iraqy, that both Isnads (chains of narration) are Sahih (authentic). The meaning of "Riba" here is the sin incurred from dealing with Riba.
Al-Tayyiby said that this opinion must be true for it to accord with likening it to a man having sexual intercourse with his mother. This is evidenced by the narration that says,
Riba is of seventy sins.
