Theft out of need

Q 2: My mother is 70 years old now. When she was young, she stole a sheep from a flock that was grazing in the desert because of poverty and the low standard of living. It is important to mention that none of its owners or their heirs are left. What should my mother do for she does not know?

A: Your mother must search for the owners of this sheep or their heirs and pay them its price. (Part No. 15; Page No. 425) Otherwise she has to give its price as Sadaqah (voluntary charity) on their behalf. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
