The meaning of 'Sard'

Q 3: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade the killing of four creatures: the ant, the bee, the hoopoe and the Sard. What is meant by the "Sard"?

A: Imam Ahmad narrated in his Musnad and Abu Dawud in his Sunan on the authority of Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) forbade the killing of four creatures: the ant, the bee, the hoopoe and the Sard. Al-Suyuty classed it as Hadith Hasan (a Hadith whose chain of narration contains a narrator with weak exactitude, but is free from eccentricity or blemish) in his Al-Jami` Al-Saghir. A Sard is a type of bird slightly larger than a sparrow, i.e. Sparrow hawk.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
