The Hadith: 'Anyone who makes claims of tribal superiority or proudly boasts about his descent'

Q: It was authentically reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) stated: Anyone who makes claims of tribal superiority or proudly boasts about his descent in the manner of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic time of ignorance) tell him, "U`dud bihinn abika" [i.e. Go bite your father's testicle]. What is the meaning of this Hadith?

A: Making claims of tribal superiority or descent in the manner of Jahiliyyah means to boast arrogantly in front of others about belonging to a specific tribe or clan by mentioning its name haughtily or arrogantly. Therefore, the Prophet (peace be upon them) said that whoever hears someone boasting in front of others about his kindred or tribe should tell him: "U`dud bihinn abika," thus reminding that arrogant person of the organ from which he originated, the testicles of his father, to stop him from behaving arrogantly.
