Q: I am a painter but this is not a permanent job. I also lead people in Salah (Prayer) in a Masjid (mosque) which abides by the Sunnah and deliver the Friday Sermon too.
Some people gave me Zakah money to spend in legal ways. I took the money to distribute it
but I took two thousand pounds for myself because I needed that sum to marry and to repair my house which was not suitable for marriage. I intended to repay this amount of money but my conditions now do not allow me to repay it, could you inform me of the solution? Is taking that money lawful or not and should I pay it back?
A:
It is not permissible for you to take from the money which was handed over to you to distribute for those who deserve Zakah, you should repay the money you took by giving it to those who deserve it and you should repent and seek forgiveness for what you have done.
