Sell animals according to their weight

Q 1: In Algeria, we buy chickens according to weight, whether they are alive or slaughtered without removing the intestines. Is this permissible? The same applies to sheep, especially Ud-hiyah (sacrificial animal offered by non-pilgrims) as the farms (Part No. 13; Page No. 290) sell the sheep by weight. Is this Ud-hiyah Halal (lawful)? If not, would you please tell me the reason why? Does the prohibition apply to the Ud-hiyah only or to every living sheep bought according to its weight?

A: The basic principle is that transactions between Muslims are permissible except those which are forbidden by Shari`ah (Islamic law) by text. Hence, we know that it is permissible to buy chickens and sheep by weight, whether they are Ud-hiyah or not, and we know of no reason in Shari`ah that prohibits this practice.
