Q: I work as a public servant in Abha Electricity Company affiliated to the Saudi United Electricity Company in
the Southern Province.
I am the manager of the department of administrative services related to workers affairs, inputs, outputs and secretary. I came to know from a reliable source that the company deposits its money in banks in return for interest though the company is owned by the state and its capital is from the state. We receive our salaries from this money. What is the ruling on this regard? (Part No. 15; Page No. 81) Can I keep on working in this company as long as my work has no relation to depositing, auditing or any financial matters? I would like to receive your answer as soon as possible because I can stand poverty but I can not stand the punishment of Hellfire. I hope that your Fatwa will be a reason for rescuing me from Hellfire if this work is unlawful.
A:
There is no wrong in
working for electricity companies because their original work which is providing electricity, charging people for this service and the like are lawful works. You receive your salary in return for your lawful work. Therefore, there is no wrong in your working with this company unless you know that your salary comes to you through Riba (usury/interest). May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
