Q:
Is it permissible for a person to see his fiancée without being in Khulwah (being alone with a member of the opposite sex),
that is, in the presence of her family and Mahrams (unmarriageable relatives)? Is it permissible for them to speak to each other without the presence of her Mahram if they have concluded the marriage contract?
A:
First,
it is permissible for a person to see his fiancée but without being in Khulwah with her. This is based on the Hadith in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“No man should be alone with a woman except in the presence of her Mahram.”
(Part No. 19; Page No. 271)
Second,
it is permissible for the couple to see, speak, and sit with each other before the consummation of the marriage, if they have concluded the marriage contract. However, they have to consider the common habits of families in their neighborhood so as to prevent false rumors. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
