Making up for a vow to fast by paying money

A: Whoever vows to fast certain days, but does not do so, has to make up for the Sawm of these days later and offer a Kaffarah for delaying the Sawm of these particular days like the Kaffarah offered for a broken oath. Such a Kaffarah is fulfilled by setting free a believing slave, feeding ten poor people through giving one kilo and a half of the common food to each poor person, or clothing ten poor persons. If a person cannot afford this, they can observe Sawm for three days, as Allah (Glorified be He) says, Allâh will not punish you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He will punish you for your deliberate oaths; for its expiation feed ten Masâkîn (poor persons), on a scale of the average of that with which you feed your own families, or clothe them or manumit a slave. But whosoever cannot afford (that), then he should fast for three days. That is the expiation for the oaths when you have sworn. And protect your oaths (i.e. do not swear much). Thus Allâh make clear to you His Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) that you may be grateful. (Part No. 23; Page No. 336) May Allah grant us success.
