Leaving out Madmadah and Istinshaq during Wudu’

Q 1: What is the ruling on a person who performs Wudu' (ablution) and washes the parts that must be washed in it, i.e., the face, arms, wipes the head and washes the feet to the ankles, but omits the Sunnah acts of Wudu', such as Madmadah (rinsing the mouth), Istinshaq (sniffing water into the nose and then expelling it) and wiping the ears (with wet fingers)?

A: Madmadah and Istinshaq are obligatory acts to accomplish Taharah (ritual purification) because they are part of the face. This is also because the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed us to perform them. `Abdullah ibn Zayd narrated in the description of how to perform Wudu': then the Prophet (peace be upon him) put his hand (in the container) and rinsed his mouth and sniffed water into his nose (and then expelled it) from one handful three times. (Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim) It is obligatory to wipe the ears because they are part of the head and because the Prophet (peace be upon him) did so. `Abdullah ibn `Amr (may Allah be pleased with them) narrated describing the Wudu' of the Prophet (peace be upon him): then he wiped his head and put (the tip of) his forefingers (Part No. 4; Page No. 81) in his ears and wiped the outside with his thumbs and the inside with his forefingers. (Related by Abu Dawud, Al-Nasa'y and Ibn Khuzaymah ranked it as Sahih [authentic]) Whoever does not perform Madmadah and Istinshaq, his Wudu' is not valid; and whoever does not wipe the inside and outside of his ears, his Wudu' is not valid.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
