Holding banquets for a widow after finishing her `Iddah

Q 4: What is the ruling on holding banquets for a widow after her `Iddah (woman's prescribed waiting period after widowhood) is over?

A: It is permissible to hold a banquet for the woman who finishes her `Iddah if this is a prevailing custom to honor the woman. (Part No. 20; Page No. 478) However, if it is held out of believing that this is a religious obligation and a prescribed action, this is a Bid`ah (innovation in religion) and it is an impermissible act.
