Forging an educational certificate

Q: What is the ruling in Shari`ah (Islamic law) on forging a school certificate in order to seek knowledge?

A: Forgery is Haram (prohibited) and one of the Major Sins, whether it is done for the purpose of education or for any other purpose. We are reminded by the statement of Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He): So shun the abomination (worshipping) of idol, and shun lying speech (false statements) and the saying of the Prophet (peace be upon him): Should I not inform you of the greatest of major sins? We said: Yes Indeed, O Messenger of Allah! He said: Associating others in worship with Allah, Being disobedient to parents. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was reclining then he sat and said: And false speech and false testimony (Agreed upon by Al-Bukhari and Muslim). May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
