Q 3: My father
performed Hajj only once. He went on foot and this was about forty years ago. In addition, he made two `Umrahs (lesser pilgrimages), one of them was at least three years before his death. My father was illiterate and I do not know how he performed that Hajj. Is it obligatory on me to make Hajj on his behalf? What is the opinion of Your Honor regarding this?
A:
Hajj is only obligatory to be performed once in a lifetime. Since the Islamic principle is that worship and rites performed by Muslims are sound, it is not obligatory on you to perform another Hajj on behalf of your father. However, in case that you do so, it will be counted as supererogatory (act of worship) and you and your father will hopefully be greatly rewarded for it.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
