Distributing money at a graveyard

Q 4: What is the legal ruling concerning the custom of distributing money at the graveyard?


A: It is permissible to give Sadaqah (voluntary charity) on behalf of the deceased. However, the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not distribute Sadaqah at the graveyard before or after burying a dead or at any other time. However, he attended many funeral processions and used to visit the graves and so did his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). Thus, distributing money at graves is a Bid`ah (innovation in religion) that contradicts the tradition of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
