Disposing of worn out Mus-haf pages

Q 3: What should I do with the Mus-haf (copy of the Qur'an) I used to read from since a long time whose pages became worn out, especially that it cannot be thrown into the garbage? Should it be buried or burned? Please substantiate your answer with evidence.

A: It is not permissible to throw the Mus-haf in the garbage or on the street when its pages are torn and worn out. It should be buried in a clean place or burned so that it might not be subjected to desecration. This is what the Sahabah (Companions of the Prophet, may Allah be pleased with them) did during the caliphate of `Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) when they burned any copies other than the master copies transcribed and distributed by `Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) throughout the Islamic countries.May Allah grant us success.
