Disposing of a house built with ill-gotten money

Q 4: A man earned Halal (lawful) and Haram (unlawful) money and built with it a house for himself and lived in it. He rented out the rest of the apartments of the house. He then made sincere Tawbah (repentance to Allah). What should he do with the house? Bear in mind that the man lives in a country that suffers from a housing problem. Should he give his income from the house as Sadaqah (voluntary charity) or what should he do after the Haram money has been mixed with the Halal?

A: He should return the Haram money to its owners or their inheritors. If he cannot do that, for not knowing who they are or for a similar reason, he can give it as Sadaqah to the poor on behalf of its owners. (Part No. 22; Page No. 333) Together with this, he must repent to Allah for what he did and beseech His Forgiveness, and also firmly resolve not to commit such sin again.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
