Q 1: I am a twenty-seven year old woman. I suffer from
disorders in the menstrual cycle which cause me many problems.
During the first eight days of the menstrual period blood comes out in drops, which is abnormal as confirmed by a doctor who said that this results from hormone disorders. But on the next eight days the menstrual blood comes out normally. I inquire whether it is permissible for me to perform Salah (Prayer) and Sawm (Fasting) during the first eight days, taking into consideration that I maintain ritual purity for only seven days a month. Is it permissible for me to make (Part No. 4; Page No. 209) X-rays on the uterus for diagnosis and treatment of this disease?
A:
You should not refrain from performing Salah and Sawm during the first eight days, because the blood that comes out during these days is not menstrual blood. The days of your menstruation are the following eight days, during which you should refrain from Salah and Sawm. You may undergo the medical examination you referred to if required.May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
