Difference between Hijab and Niqab; and dress of fame

Q 3: What is the ruling on Hijab (veil)? What is the difference between Hijab and Niqab? Finally, what is the dress of fame?

A: It is Wajib (obligatory) that women cover their `Awrah (parts of the body that must be covered in public), including their faces, in the presence of non-Mahrams (not spouses or unmarriageable relatives). (Part No. 17; Page No. 169) It is Haram (prohibited) for them to uncover their `Awrah. This is called Hijab and its opposite is Sufur. Niqab is the face veil that women wear and make openings for their eyes to be able to see. The dress of fame refers to attractive clothes that arouse astonishment and laughter. Garments that cover the `Awrah are not dresses of fame. They only arouse the astonishment or laughter of foolish people of weak faith. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
