A woman meeting her son-in-law with her head unveiled
Q: Please advise us on the Islamic ruling on:1.
Is it permissible for a woman to meet her son-in-law with her head unveiled?
2. Is it permissible for her to meet him wearing short clothes that come down over her knees?3. Is it permissible for her to kiss him like her son?4. Is it permissible for her to hug him? Please advise us and may Allah benefit you and all Muslims with your knowledge. Amen!
A:
A mother-in-law is a Mahram (unmarriageable relative) to her son-in-law, therefore, it is permissible for him to see of her what he is permitted to see of his other Mahrams, such as the face, hands, neck, hair, and the like. However, it is not permissible for a woman to kiss and hug her son-in-law; this is Munkar (that which is unacceptable or disapproved of by Islamic law and Muslims of sound intellect) and should only be done to a husband and also to avoid Fitnah (temptation). (Part No. 17; Page No. 366) However, it is permissible for him to kiss her on the head, as there is no prohibition against this. May Allah grant us success. May peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and Companions.
