A: If your wife put the cover on the baby's face and he died because he was suffocated, it is Wajib on her to offer a Kaffarah. Such a Kaffarah is to free a believing slave or, if she is unable to do so, she should observe Sawm for two successive months, i.e. sixty days. However, if your wife did not put the cover on the concerned baby's face; no Kaffarah has to be made by her because she did not cause his death.May Allah grant us success.
